Notice of Meeting Recording
PATACS's Saturday meetings, and some Arlington meetings utilize video and audio equipment to webcast and record the sessions for remote members unable to attend our programs in person. Individuals attending our meetings, both in-person and remotely, should be aware that their images and remarks may be transmitted and 'broadcast' on the Internet without delay, and recorded without benefit of editing. Links to these recordings are placed on this web page as time and resources permit.
Presentation materials may be copyrighted by their creators. These recordings are intended for the personal use of PATACS and OPCUG members, and by member organizations of the Association of Personal Computer User Groups.
To view these recordings:
- (Exact steps may vary depending upon what software and settings/defaults are on your computer.)
- Click on the 'Video' link following the presenter's name and topic. You may see a notation to Start the presentation at a time point, such as 8:30 (eight minutes, 30 seconds into the recording).
- Roll your mouse pointer over the bottom of the screen image.
- A recording time line will appear (if not already present).
- Click and drag the indicator on the time line to the indicated point of the beginning of the presentation. (The earlier material is usually the announcements and Q&A portion of the meeting.)

Lorrin Garson: Cryptograpy for the Rest of Us - PDF file
Member Contributions on this topic and other material from our Q&A sessions:
Roger Hillson - Here's a link to the American Cryptogram Association. The ACA is a hobby organization for people who enjoy breaking classical 'paper and pencil' ciphers. Many people write and use computer scripts for generating statistics and trial solutions; this is the part that I find most interesting.
An abbreviated sample copy of the "The Cryptogram" can be downloaded from the ACA website. There is a computer column every month in the regular journal, but not in the sample issue. Pascal and Python seem to be the most popular languages for the scripts that people submit.
http://cryptogram.org/
Gabe Goldberg - secure email:
Voltage SecureMail uses asymmetric encryption, so my private key is used by
me to decrypt, you encrypt with my public key. No need for key exchange,
just key name (email address) + key material in key server = unique key.
...so all you need is someone's public key (which they can freely broadcast); they use their closely held private key to read the email. As Lorrin said, there's a tiny bit of process setting up to send/read encrypted email, but products like SecureMail simplify it. Of course, that one is business-oriented, but many serve consumers.
Mel Goldfarb - scams:
The Director (or other Special Agents) of the FBI don't send email demanding payments for your alleged transgressions. (They'll kick down your door! Ed.) Don't pay - it's 'RansomWare!
Microsoft will not call you on the phone with a line of bullstuff about how your computer is infected and they're calling to help. The ploy of these imposters is to get you to let them intall a 'helper' program on your computer, which will really screw it up, then hold you for ransom to fix it. JUST HANG UP !!
